a slow and tedious profession
Sculpting stone is a time consuming endeavor that requires one to make an aggregate of thousands of conductive and well considered moves. The hardness of the stone tends to curb random or ill-considered variations of forms. This physical resistance of the stone is essential to discourage commercial proponents of “quick and cheap”.
Although the stone sculptor’s tools have evolved in the past century, I still find myself drawn to human touch as a means to navigate stone sculpture. Despite modern automated technologies that may expedite the sculpting process, I’d rather immerse myself in a deep intersensory communication with stone, which provides me the insight and inspiration to produce vibrant and sublime sculptures by hand, which is truly what matters to me.
ABOUT
Victor Oriecuia is a Canadian stone sculptor residing in Kingston Ontario. Victor has 20 years of stone sculpting and installation experience and is passionate about pursuing and preserving old-world sculpting traditions. Victor’s hand carved sculptures push the perceptions and limitations of marble, onyx, and other hard stones. He is drawn to the intimate nature and devotion required to render sculptures, and the unlimited potential of natural stone. Victor’s exquisite sculptures engage viewers with an artform that has remained virtually unchanged throughout human history, and continues in the tradition of creating works of art with an indescribable presence.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Throughout my 20 year sculpting career, I have come to value and understand the profound significance of patience and resiliency, which enables me to execute elaborate and vibrant sculptures in the most unforgiving stones. The call of creation has been with me since I was a teenager, and this desire has led me down a path of education, access to world class stone and training, and the never-ending exploration of my artistic abilities and opportunities.
My stone sculpting education and experience enables me to execute old world stone portraits, figurative sculptures, and abstract work in the most demanding stones. I have been blessed to have created one of a kind sculptures for domestic and international private collectors, corporate clients, financial and educational institutions and for the municipality of Longera, in Italy.
My work focuses on the variability and unpredictability of all personal and spiritual relationships. Struggles, failures and triumphs in emotional interactions are common to us all. As I progress through each piece, I am able to examine my connection to natural elements and in turn, engage the viewer in an intersensory dialogue which ultimately evokes an emotional response.
